Global Retailers Rise in 2014: Deloitte’s Top Retailers Revealed
Deloitte’s recently released ‘Global Powers of Retailing 2014’ includes a wealth of knowledge and insight into the international retail market, including rankings of the biggest players.
The Global Powers of Retail Report from Deloitte identifies the largest 250 retailers in the world, revealing they collectively grew by 4.9 percent – US$4.3 trillion – in the past financial year.
The report pulls together publicly available data for the fiscal year 2012 and aims to analyse these companies and market opportunities by segment, growth rates and other trends. Deloitte has also listed the world’s top 50 online retailers for the first time.
“The global retail industry got off to a difficult start in the last year,” Dr. Ira Kalish, Chief Global Economist for Deloitte said in Tuesday’s release. “However, it is encouraging to see that the world’s leading retailers were able to plough on through the difficult period to reap the rewards of increased consumer spend.”
This upwards trend may well continue, however a number of the largest retail brands were shown to have potentially limited themselves in order to maintain profitability during the first half of FY2012. Whether these divestments prove to continue hampering their growth is yet to be seen.
“Interestingly, for the first time this year’s report shows that some of the top retailers undertook a series of sell-offs in order to remain profitable and ride out the tough trading period,” Kalish said.
E-Commerce accounts for an increasing share of total retail revenues, with Deloitte’s Top 250 retailers generating 7.7 percent of their sales online. The report also show that online sales are growing fastest among Asia-Pacific retailers, whereas the opposite is true for the North American region.
By comparison, the top 10 e-retailers listed prove the strength of emerging markets, as well as just how multichannel some international retailers have become, such as Wal-Mart and Tesco, which appear in both top ten lists.
