John Lewis: £1bn Online Sales Milestone Ahead of Schedule
UK retailer John Lewis continues to ride the e-commerce train of success, announcing online sales have exceeded £1billion on a consecutive 52-week basis.
John Lewis has surpassed the £1billion mark nearly 12 months ahead of schedule. The milestone came after a massive online replatform exercise.
The retailer had previously estimated reaching £1billion of sales in 2014.
John Lewis rolled out its EPIC platform earlier this year. Three years in the making, the £40million EPIC project aimed to boost the online channel and support the overall ‘customer-focused’ omni-channel strategy.
Online Director Mark Lewis said the website was a key focus for the company with growing online-centric customers. Lewis has been appointed to head the e-commerce department.
“We have a leading omni-channel strategy, which our customers love, but to continue to deliver the service our customers want, we need a website that will serve us as well as the old one did, and maintain our position as a leading innovator in online retailing,” he said.
IT Director Paul Coby said John Lewis’ £1billion online sales had followed a 40 percent rise in sales for johnlewis.com in 2012.
“With sales up over 40 percent for johnlewis.com in 2012, we’re seeing an unprecedented pace of online growth and customers are making more demands on our website, than ever before. These demands have been particularly evident in the electrical and home technology departments.
“The billion pound success of johnlewis.com is a reflection of our strategy to put the customer at the heart of our online operations. Early testing at every stage of the build, and inviting over three million customers to use our beta site before full launch, has resulted in what we believe will be an outstanding experience and journey for customers.”
Simon Russell, Director, Retail Operations Development for John Lewis will be speaking at the 2013 Online Retailer Conference & E-commerce Expo, to be held in Sydney from August 19-22, 2013. Advance ticketing has commenced – visit www.onlineretailer.com.
